Hello! I hope you all had a nice start to your week? Hubby is now in Greece too and, even if he’s still working, he’s helped me beautify the blog homepage a bit. Let me know if you like the changes? Today, I would like to speak to you about a brand new product which landed in my hands as a Valentine’s gift by hubby, together with Le Métier de Beauté Indelible Eye Prism that I reviewed here. The Marc Jacobs Matte Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner is Marc Jacobs Beauty giving us their award-wining Highliners in matte formula. I was really excited by this release and for good reason!
my eyelids and eyeliner/pencil preferences
How an eyeliner/ eye pencil performs on you, will depend on a) weather conditions and b) your own eyelids. When I’m in Greece in the summer, in 35 °C, my eye make-up and especially my eye pencil lasts less than when I’m in London in 15 °C. However, if London weather is wet and Athens weather is dry, then I’m luckier in Athens. You can’t do anything about the weather, but you can help your make-up last longer by being aware of how your eyelids behave during the day. Are they oily, dry or normal? Mine start normal but get very oily during the day. They also have this tendency to “absorb” colour. Even if an eyeshadow doesn’t crease, a lot of the time I find that the colour impact is less a few hours into the day. I, therefore, always use a primer (love the Nars one).
A primer helps my eyeliner/ pencil stay put and not smudge. Tight lining in my upper and lower waterlines is a different story though. No eye pencil can stay put in my waterline. It’s rather annoying actually, as most eye pencils migrate in about one hour, including some that are reputed to be long-lasting. I was more than happy to discover the Make Up For Ever Aqua Eye pencils last year, because they stay put for at least 6 hours on me. And that’s the only formula that I’ve trusted not to mess my eye make-up so far. Until I discovered the Marc Jacobs Matte Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner (aka Marc Jacobs Matte Highliner).
THE Marc Jacobs Matte Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner
The Marc Jacobs Matte Highliner claims that it’s:
- Highly pigmented, giving intense colour pay-off
- Long-lasting, up to 12 hours of wear
- Gliding smoothly for precise application
I have shades (Earth)quake 41, which is a dark brown and (Iron)y 45, which is a dark grey. These are gorgeous, classic shades that can be used both as liners or as a base for a smokey eye. I tested both of them extensively and I can confirm that they are indeed very long-lasting and highly pigmented. They glide on the eyes beautifully, giving me an intense, matte line effect with no effort. I then have around 20 seconds to smudge, if I so wish. Once dry, they set and don’t move at all for around 8-9 hours on me. In my waterline, they last for 6-7 hours which is as long as the MUFE Aqua eye pencils last too.
Both Marc Jacobs Matte Highliners perform really well on me and I’m very happy about that! I love the matte effect and the colour pay off is so gorgeous! I, personally, prefer my eye pencils to be pigmented, as I sometimes rely on them to create an eye look. And, I have to admit, I’m much more of an eye pencil than an eyeshadow girl. When I’m in a rush (which is most days!), I just wear a bit of tinted moisturiser, eye pencil and mascara and am ready to go. If I can trust this eye pencil to stay put, then I won’t worry about my make-up all day long! That’s why I find these liners to be so amazing. Have a look at the photos below and you can see how well Irony lasted on me:
This is one of the looks I created with this Matte Highliner:
It literally took me five minutes to do my whole face and it looks like I paid more effort, doesn’t it? On my face, I’m wearing the Armani Power Fabric Foundation in Shade 7.5 (a bit dark, but I forgot to take my 6.5 with me) and the Charlotte Tilbury Beach Stick in Moon Beach. I have a bit of lip balm on my lips. I should mention that in all of the photos above, I’m wearing the Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara, which I love. It’ s a fantastic mascara that doesn’t transfer and gives my lashes great volume.
For those of you that are glasses wearers, I tested this look with my darker pair of glasses and it worked just fine! If you’re interested, from time to time, I post make-up looks that are flattering for glasses wearers. I’ve experimented quite a bit with what looks good and what looks heavy, so would be happy to share my views and hear yours.
The Marc Jacobs Matte Highliners are formulated without parabens. There are 27 shades, ranging from pastels to darker shades, like the ones I have. In the UK, you can swatch them in store or order online exclusivelty at John Lewis. They retail at £20.
Have you tried any Marc Jacobs Highliners? Are you interested in matte eye pencils or you prefer ones with glitter?
